Event Report
By Ms. Keerthana
[Intern, Office of International
Programmes]
The Office of International Programmes organized a workshop titled “Shortlisting U.S. Universities and Writing Your SOP: Key Strategies and Common Mistakes to Avoid” on 24 July 2025 at the Chemistry Seminar Hall.
The event was conducted in collaboration with EducationUSA, a U.S. Department of State-supported advising network, and the American Center, Chennai.
The programme began with a welcome note and the introduction of the guest speakers by the master of ceremonies, Ms. Shrestha.
The speakers were Mr. Rishi Kumar, Programme Associate at the American Center, and EducationUSA advisers Ms. Elizabeth and Mr. Arvind Sivamani. This was followed by the presentation of mementos and a group photograph session.
The session continued with a college prayer led by Ms. Stephanie, an intern, setting a formal tone for the academic engagement ahead.
Dr. Samuel Rufus, Dean of International Programmes, delivered the inaugural address, emphasizing the value of well-crafted Statements of Purpose and the importance of informed university selection. He also acknowledged the support of the institution’s leadership, the efforts of the student intern team, and the contribution of Ms. Rishitha in initiating the collaboration.
Mr. Rishi Kumar opened the technical session by sharing an overview of the American Center and its educational resources. He introduced the audience to the wide range of academic tools and cultural programmes offered at the center, including eLibraryUSA, which provides access to research databases, online English learning platforms, and global newspapers.
He encouraged students to make use of these free facilities and explained the process of membership registration. He also touched on various U.S. exchange and fellowship programmes available to Indian students.
Ms. Elizabeth followed with an in-depth session on SOP writing. Drawing from her own experience as a recent U.S. graduate, she provided a clear explanation of what universities look for in an SOP.
Her talk covered the elements of structure, personalization, tone, and common writing errors. She distributed handouts with guided templates and urged students to begin early, revise multiple drafts, and reflect authentically on their academic and career goals. Her session received active engagement from the participants and was appreciated for its clarity and relevance.
The final speaker, Mr. Arvind Sivamani, presented a detailed framework for shortlisting universities. He advised students to evaluate institutions based on five factors: academic alignment, financial affordability, location suitability, campus culture, and career outcomes. Emphasizing the need for a balanced approach, he recommended creating a shortlist that includes reach, match, and safety options.
He also cautioned against choosing universities solely based on
rankings or peer preferences and encouraged a research-driven strategy grounded
in EducationUSA’s "5 Steps to U.S. Study" methodology.
Following his session, a question-and-answer segment was conducted, where he addressed individual queries from students and provided detailed clarifications.
In his concluding remarks, Mr. Arvind Sivamani thanked the audience for their patience and active participation. He also announced the upcoming EducationUSA Fair and encouraged all attendees to make use of the opportunity to meet representatives from U.S. universities.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Arun Kumar Joseph, Associate Dean of International Programmes, who acknowledged the speakers, organizers, and participants.

Intern, Office of International Programmes, MCC
On the 24th of June 2025, the Office of the Dean of International Programmes hosted its first study abroad seminar of the academic year. This seminar focused on higher studies in the USA and South Korea.
The resource people for the programme were Dr. Sanjay Purushotham, India’s liaison, International Affairs, Dallas Baptist University; Dr. Robert C. Williams, founder and president of Pennsylvania Center for International Exchange and Partnership (PCIEP); and Ms. Elka Mariam Thomas, teaching assistant, Office of International Studies, Hoseo University.
The Associate Dean of International Programs (SFS), Dr. Millicent Serena, was the MC of the event. The programme started formally, with an opening prayer by Associate Dean of Internation Programs (Aided), Dr. Arun Kumar, followed by a warm welcome to the visiting dignitaries by Dr. Serena. She then requested Dr. Samuel Rufus, Dean of International Programs, Madras Christian College, to address the gathering.
Dr. Rufus talked about the Office of International Programs, stating that it is connected with more than 35 global institutions with similar values, in hopes to achieve global competence.
The Office offers study abroad programs, staff exchange programs, study abroad seminars, VISA (Virtual Interaction with Scholars Abroad) programs, joint research collaborations, etc.
Following the Dean’s address, interns of the Office introduced the speakers of the day and mementoes were presented to the speakers to honour and felicitate them. Ms Andrea introduced Dr. Sanjay Purushotham. Ms. Prisilla introduced Dr. Robert C. Williams and Dr. Rufus presented a memento. Ms. Tejashree introduced Ms. Elka and Dr. Arun and Dr. Serena proceeded to felicitate her.
“Do your homework before you decide where to study,” said Dr. Sanjay Purushotham, from Dallas Baptist University. Dr. Sanjay was the first speaker of the day.
He spoke about the importance of planning ahead and provided students a list of questions that they should ask before choosing a university.
Some of the questions he posed were about the location of the university, climate, cost of living and crime rate around the university, as well as the age and ranking of the university.
He declared that “despite the turmoil and turbulence in the country, the US is still widely chosen by students to pursue their higher education.” He provided a plan of when each step in our admission and selection process should be completed, to ensure a smooth and seamless experience.
He went on to talk about the Dallas Baptist University, founded in 1898. The university holds over 4500 students, 100 bachelor’s degree programs, 35 master’s degree programs, and 2 doctoral programs.
The campus is 15 minutes away from the Dallas airport and has a sprawling campus of 360 acres. It has been called one of the most beautiful and safest college campuses in Texas. Over 2500 students live on campus in fully furnished, clean places – dorms or apartments, according to their budget and need. Dr. Sanjay also talked about the cost of studying in the US, mentioning the credit system and touching on STEM and non-STEM programs.
The talk ended with a video of the Dallas Baptist University campus, sprawling, lush, and green, housing lakes, parks, coffee shops, and even a bike trail. A student testimonial from Ivana mentioned the beautiful sunrise and sunset seen from the campus.
Next, Ms. Pearlina, who was fresh off the heels of her return from LeTourneau University, Texas, addressed the gathering. A student of English Literature, she spent her fourth semester abroad.
She talked about some of the differences between the college system in the US and India, especially the exam and homework system. She told the audience that she experienced a personal transformation and formed bonds with people from all around the world.
“Once you have a dream or desire, pursue it. What would you do when you fall in love? – Pursue it! It’s just like that,” declared Dr. William Roberts, father to four daughters. “It all starts with a dream. Dreams manifest your next step.”
His fascination with the US began at age 9, when he watched the first landing on the moon. He began to wonder about the country and began to dream of going there himself.
He talked to the audience about the World Education Services (WES). He informed the audience that some universities need transcripts to be assessed by the WES, to make sure that students are eligible for the courses they apply for.
“Presidents may come and go. The political climate may change. But, you need to pursue your dream,” he said. “Keep your purpose in your heart and mind. Seek opportunities and don’t be shy. Come out of your comfort zone and develop new skills.”
He told the audience to take advantage of every offer that comes their way. He talked about the graduate assistantship that offers tuition waivers and stipends. He ended his talk with a small anecdote about a student that he sent to Madras Christian College as part of the student exchange program.
This student was once part of Dr. Serena’s class. Both had joy in their eyes as Dr. Robert talked about this boy’s transformation.
“It will chase you, don’t chase it,” said Ms. Elka Mariam Thomas. She spoke about her experience and how she ended up in South Korea.
Ms. Elka is an alumni of Madras Christian College. She worked in the Department of Commerce and in the school of continuing education. She always planned to go abroad to pursue her doctoral program.
Initially, she intended to go to the US, after waiting for 2 years to be accepted in Madras Christian College.
Her application and admission in Hoseo University was very sudden and unexpected. She made a quick decision to take the spot and hopped on a plane to South Korea. She took a Korean language course to facilitate her integration into the community. She worked as a teaching assistant while writing her thesis.
She said she adjusted to society thanks to her social nature. She conversed very easily with teachers and was never ashamed of who she was.
Once the speakers of the day were done with their talks, the mic was passed around the room, through the audience, allowing them to ask questions.
The program ended with a group photo with the dignitaries and all the participants.

24th October 2024 | A Report
The Study Abroad Seminar conducted by the Office of International Programmes reached fruition on 24th October 2024, from 11.30 a. m to 1 p.m.
The meeting began with the College Prayer read out by Ms. Alphy Benny. Ms. Catherin Sabu was the Master of Ceremonies for the programme. She was ably assisted by Mr. Sabarinathan, Ms. Alphy Benny, Ms. Zibiah Merin and Ms. Lindsay Rose Jordy. Ms. Smriti Wilson coordinated the Q & A Session.
Dr. Samuel Rufus, Dean of the International Programmes warmly welcomed the students and the resource persons for this Seminar, on behalf of the Principal and Madras Christian College. He also reminded the attendees of the functional webpage of Dean IP and whatsapp group for Study Abroad Opportunities. Then, Prof. J. Arun Kumar, the Associate Dean of International Programmes introduced the guests for the day.
The Study Abroad Seminar focused on the opportunities for Higher Studies in Germany. It was attended by seven imminent faculties from Germany, Dr. Michael Peter Watzlawik, Ms. Hannah Dorothea, Dr. Jan Sprinder, Dr. Kay Helge Wendler, Dr. Melanie Blaue, Dr. Maximillian Puls and Ms. Lena Stemman - each specializing in a different arena ranging from Religion to Business Psychology.
In his address to the gathering, Dr. Michael thanked the College and the students for the overwhelming response. About the culture and people of India, Dr. Michael quoted a friend from Karnataka, saying, "I was told to ‘expect the unexpected’ in India, and so far I’ve been so excited by the unexpected warmth and hospitality that I find in India." A small circulation group including Dr. Michael, Dr. Jan and Ms. Christianne have been always actively indulging in exchanges with English speakers for the past twelve years, he observed.
Ms. Melanie Blaue, in her response, expressed her eagerness to engage in further cultural interactions, as her own specialisation is in yoga and meditation.
Ms. Karen Hilary from Skillwise Consultancy too shared her experiences and said that it was a good time to understand the German culture as well as ours, and motivated the students to engage in conversations that would shape perspectives.
Dr. MaximiIIian Puls and Dr. Kay Helge Wendler then presented to the students the foundational factors to note in order to pursue Higher education in Germany. Germany has world-class education and top notch technology to keep up with it. From engineering to humanities, the country offers a wide variety of Majors in all Disciplines. The key ideas of the presentation being –
•The first key to success for the aspirants is to learn the German language. Mastering the language and earning a certification in it are equally essential while aspiring to pursue Higher education in Germany. They also suggested Goethe Institute as a good platform to secure a certification accepted in all the universities and workplaces across Germany.
•They
also said that students should keep an eye on the scholarships available. The
German education system provides free education for all. The only fee would be
an amount at the beginning of the semester which would include multiple
benefits and student concessions.
•Germany
is also a prestigious host to a few top notch universities as the TUM Berlin,
Hamburg University, University of Hildesheim and University of Applied
Sciences. Hamburg offers students both academic theory and practical experience
in the real world. It provides They offer strong academic programs, language to
integration programs and buddy programs for the smooth sail of academics.
An amazing Q&A session that followed, moderated by Ms. Smrithi Wilson and Mr. Chris Immanuel, Global Student Ambassadors, opened the floor to the audience, to rectify the doubts and queries of our students.
• To the question asked by Mohit from I M.A Philosophy pertaining to the availability of affordable German learning platforms, Mr. Michael answered that their circulation group is discussing this issue and would soon come up with a solution. Ms. Karen and Mr. Chris suggested the use of digital platforms or even watching movies and dramas; and connecting with others, in the language to make the learning process easier.
•Mr. AIan Eben enquired about the availability of courses and other academic possibilities in Pipe organ which was his passion.
The faculty members responded that there are C, B and A levels of organ learning. It is also an integral part of the church music in Germany and each service would earn you 40-50 Euros, so anyone interested is greatly welcome.
•Yet another question that followed was whether to opt for a University located in metropolitan or rural Germany. The faculties responded that cities are preferable, however more than the location it is the connections you make with people, the match of your course with your goal is what truly matters. Germany however has a very lesser population. From Frankfurt to down south it is just a 11 hours’ journey, so it is easy to get connected to people and places as well.
•Regarding why one should prefer Germany over the U.S, they confidently answered that Germany provides free education and social health care facilities to all. Unlike the U.S, job opportunities is not a competitive market, and there are brilliant opportunities in bureaucracy, corporate world and many other arenas in Germany for highly educated people.
The Q & A session was followed by a few general questions about Germany and its culture. Before concluding, Mr. Kay reminded once again that it is important to connect to people who share the same vision and goals as you. The Indian Association of students present in many German universities, and common Facebook groups would be a great opportunity to initiate this. And at the end of the day, it is your passion that pays off, said Mr. Kay.
Mr. Chris Immanuel, Global Student Ambassador, thanked everyone who attended the Seminar, on behalf of Madras Christian College and the Seminar was highly beneficial for the participants.
