Offering Programme in Shipping and Logistics and Mapping it with NSDC | A Report

Offering Programme in Shipping and Logistics and Mapping it with NSDC

Meeting on 28th June 2024 | A Report

A special meeting with HoDs was convened on 28th June 2024, to discuss the modalities on offering the Diploma Course in Shipping and Logistics.

SCE already offers a diploma programme in Logistics. Considering J-Ark’s interest, they had initially prepared a proposal for a postgraduate diploma in Shipping and Logistics, along with a tentative curriculum.

However, during the meeting, the idea of a regular meeting gained traction. This would allow more students to enroll, compared to a postgraduate diploma which would be restricted to students who already have a bachelor’s degree. An additional benefit of the diploma course is the potential for placement opportunities for graduates.

Plan of Action

Actionables have been classified under four heads based on the discussion

I Curriculum Design and Development

* To offer Diploma in Shipping and Logistics in the place of Post graduate diploma

* Choose 6 papers per semester total 12 papers in 1 year of diploma

* Each paper 60 -90 hours comprising of 4-6 credits

Semester-Abroad Programme at LeTourneau University | Second Call

25th June 2024

Dear Students,

Happy to know that many of you have expressed interest in the Semester Abroad Programme.

Please note the following particulars.

Go through each line very carefully before you go ahead and apply for the Programme –

In order to admit students to LeTourneau for Fall 2024 and create students’ I-20s, please complete and submit the following documentation:

Before filling up the Application Form, make sure you have the following handy with you -

Two Academic Reference Forms from 2 different university professors or advisors (attached)

Official college transcripts (minimum GPA of 2.5)

Statement or Essay about why you want to come to LETU

Official English certificate (Sample attached)

Financial Support Verification (a bank statement or letter from a bank or employer showing at least $8,500 as bank balance)

Color copy of passport page

Many program coordinators will collect these documents and send them all together in one packet by email.

Students will need to provide proof of finances to cover $8,500 for one semester (5 months). This is the amount that the visa officer will use when considering whether or not students can actually afford to come and study at our university.

Added Suggestions from Officials at Le Tourneau University for our Students

Our partners also usually start mapping classes based on our Fall 2023 course listing.  Please know that students may take up to 17 credits without any tuition charge.

Students may take online classes as long as they take a minimum of 9 credits on campus (Offline) and a minimum of 12 credits overall. When our Fall 2024 course listing becomes available in October, the course list may be finalized. Please find here our on campus Fall 2023 class listing.

https://www.letu.edu/academics/course-schedules/residential-sp23.html

Please find here our offline Fall 2023 class listing.

https://www.letu.edu/academics/course-schedules/global-sp23.html

Also, LeTourneau is very generous in that it allows students to take up to 17 credits per semester without charging anything extra.

Of course this is a very heavy load and students seldom take advantage of this, but this option does exist. We would like their updated transcripts when available, especially for the current semester.

A place I would suggest they look at is the course offerings from our university.  These differ every semester. Here is a link to our course listings for the Fall semester:

https://www.letu.edu/academics/course-schedules/residential-sp24.html

You can check our course catalog for a description of each course and if the students meet the prerequisites:

http://catalog.letu.edu/index.php?catoid=11

The value of credits is the last digit in the course number.

They to take at least 12 credits - 3 of these credits can be online courses.  Here is a link to our online courses:

Preliminary Meeting for Rendezvous with Dr. Venkatesh, Elmhurst University

3rd June 2024

The Deanery of IP organized a preliminary meeting today in the Council Room ahead of the visit of Dr. Venkatesh, Elmhurst University, to MCC [on 8th June 2024].

Presenting below the minutes of the meeting.

Members Present

Dr. Samuel Asirvatham, HoD, Physics (Aided)

Dr. Hannah Clara, HoD, Physics (SFS)

Dr. Mahalakshmi, Dean of Sciences

Dr. Selvakumari, Dept of Physics

Dr. Samuel Rufus, Dean of International Programmes

The meeting began with the opening prayer by Dr. Mahalakshmi, Dean of Sciences.

Dr. Selvakumari who has visited Elmhurst in the past noted that, Elmhurst’s University is a very sylvan campus with a pleasant weather all year. Fall Semester would be a bit more of chilly for students, and so Spring Semester could be preferred. The University has good connections with a host of other famous Institutions, renowned scientists and Nobel laureates, she noted.

Approximately 12 students have expressed their interest in the Semester Abroad programme with Elmhurst University (Six from Day and six from SFS).

It was suggested by the faculty members that the following ten points be taken up with Dr. Venkatesh during his visit to MCC.

1. Budget to be clearly presented. Travel grants or fee subsidies would be a great help for our students, since not many can afford the fee structure of Elmhurst.

2. The full syllabus content to be taken up for discussion with Dr. Venkatesh.

3. Preferably IV or V Semester would be better, since it suits and maps with their course content at Elmhurst. If it’s in the IV Semester, then, students need to do a crash course [like students who went to Le Tourneau did] for their Part I, Part II Course requirements. For V Semester, these requirements are not there.

4. As regards the 2 + 2 Programme offered by Dr. Venkatesh at Elmhurst, it was suggested that, we can offer a Diploma for two years with the School of Continuing Education, (similar to the MoU with University of Newcastle) to facilitate the lateral entry for the next two years with Elmhurst, for students to earn their degree.

5. If it’s going to be 3+1 programme, would it be feasible for our students to complete their three-year degree programme in MCC, and then join their fourth year in Elmhurst’s to gain an additional degree? If so, a Bridge Course is needed for our students to join their Fourth year there.

6. The Course Fee and Accommodation Fee should also be discussed.

7. Do the selected students have the opportunity to work part-time at Elmhurst’s? If so, for how many hours a month, and will it help them manage their finances?

8. What are the ‘market prospects’ for the programme offered by Elmhurst?

9. Will Elmhurst University help in facilitating Visa processing for our students?

10. It was also suggested that Faculty exchange and student exchange be discussed during his visit.

Rendezvous with Dr. Narasinga Rao, University of Central Oklahoma

An Inspiring Rendezvous with Dr. Narasinga Rao

25th & 27th May 2024 | MCC

It was a long-planned rendezvous with an illustrious alumnus of MCC, [1954-58] [and an accomplished American academic] – Dr. Narasinga Rao - on 25th & 27th May 2024 in MCC.

Dr. S. Narasinga Rao, now 86 years old, has entire reems of accomplishments to his credit!

He is fondly known as the “Grandfather of Undergraduate Research in Oklahoma”. Dr. Rao also has the privilege of studying under Nobel Laureates, Dr. Herbert Hauptman and Sir John Eccles.

He is Professor Emeritus, Department of Physics and Engineering, University of Central Oklahoma.

When we extended a warm welcome to him over email, he promptly responded to our email, agreeing to meet the officials of the College on Saturday, 25th May 2024, and the typical MCC Gentleman that he is, he was seen waiting in the reception 20 minutes ahead of time!

During his rendezvous with us in his beloved alma mater Madras Christian College, Dr. Rao shared a lot of his fond memories of his association with his Hall, his Professors, his Mentors and his Principals.

He also had a date with his favourite Selaiyur Hall, where he joined us for lunch, – the same dining hall where he had his routine food for over a decade, almost seven decades ago!

Giving below, a few tidbits from his highly engaging conversations with us.

I was teaching here in MCC from 1958 to 1967. In 1962 I was Assistant Warden in Selaiyur Hall. When I became tutor I was staying in Heber Hall. I was in the special room No.100 for nine years. I very much enjoyed my stay in Selaiyur Hall, said a happy Dr. Rao.

I have been here many times, including the Physics Society’s Event in 2019. Dr. Prasanna’s father Dr. Francis Sounderraj was a student in Room No. 101 in Selaiyur Hall when I was a tutor in Room 100.

Francis wanted me to come and start the Physics Department in KCC, Kodaikanal. But I couldn’t come because I was Dean at Oklahoma University that time. But I deputed another Professor who later came and started the Department here in KCC.

I fondly remember my association with Dr. Bhat, and Dr. V. S. Venkataramanan in the Department of English. His uncle Subbu was my Professor for English. In fact, Subbu and MacPhail taught me English.

MacPhail became the Principal in 1962. When I started as Faculty, Boyd was my Principal.

Prof. Martin was Principal for a few months before MacPhail took over. When I left college, Dr. Chandran Devanesan was Principal.

Chandran wanted me to come back from US. I wanted to come back, but since I had lost my station seniority, and I was told that I had to begin right from scratch, I didn’t!

I met Dr. B.M. Arthur yesterday. He is 98 years old now. I’m in constant touch with him. For every Christmas, and for his birthday as well, I send a special cake for him, every year. We were good friends even as bachelors. S. R. Karunakaran, Arthur, and myself.

I met even V. K. Purushothaman, Professor of Malayalam.

We had given a donation to the Computer Lab back then along with P. M. Mathews, some six years ago.

R. Balakrishnan [fondly called Balaki) was my student. He took over my place in the Department when I left MCC. I am going to Bangalore on Tuesday, where I’ll be meeting him.

Prof. M.A. Thangaraj was my mentor in MCC. I met him in Madurai’s American College. He was a great man, and a very good role model. All these people, including Dr. Benet Albert were good disciplinarians. Benet retired as Principal in 1978.

Duncan came as a bachelor here. We both stayed in Selaiyur Hall, and I taught him Tamil. When I went to London three years back, I went to Duncan’s house. Duncan had passed away. I am still in touch with his wife Margaret, and son, Donald Forrester. Donald was four years old, when I left MCC in 1967.

Narayanan, IAS, Former Economic Adviser to the Prime Minister, who was responsible for implementation of economic policies of several Ministries, was my student. He then became my colleague. So I went and stayed with him in Delhi before his retirement. We both are great friends. There was another Narayan in the same batch. He became the Ambassador to Switzerland for six years. When I went to a conference in Hyderabad two years ago, I met him there.

MM. Rajendran, [Former Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, and Governor of Orissa] was my Demonstrator in MCC. He was one year senior to me. K. Ragunath, [who served as the Foreign Secretary of India, and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh as well as Ambassador to Russia, Nigeria and the Philippines], and K. Raman were brothers. They both studied here.

BPR Vittal, IAS, Former Chief Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh, and Secretary, Finance and Planning, government of Andhra Pradesh, from 1972 to 1982, and had a brief stint at the International Monetary Fund as fiscal adviser to the governments of Sudan and Malawi, was my friend.

C. T. Kurien told me that Vittal had passed away in June 2020, in his 93rd year. C. T. Kurien and Vittal were in the same apartment in Bangalore.

The last Principal with whom I was very close to, was Abel, who later became Vice Chancellor of Krishnadevaraya University.

Mithra (former Principal of MCC) and I were together in Selaiyur Hall. Mithra was in Room 36 and I was in room 20.

The last date of his application for US, he was very sick. So I filled up the application for him. Dr. Crispin Devadosss, former HoD of Botany is my good friend.

I have collaborations with three Universities in Bangalore. So I will be visiting them as well.

I wrote B. M. Arthur’s life history. I got inspired and then I too wrote my life journey, reminisced Dr. Rao!

Interestingly, he had precious photos as memories of the good old past, which he showed us with such exhilaration writ large on him. The photo when Boyd retired in 1958.

He also shared a very interesting news that Dr. Radhakrishnan, the second President of India, flew in from Delhi just to congratulate Prof. Chandran Devanesan, [the first Indian Principal of MCC], for having received his doctorate!

When Prof. Kibble (Dept of Mathematics) retired, (he was my teacher) Benet asked me to arrange a party for him in Selaiyur Hall. Kibble’s son was close to bagging the Nobel Prize.

Dr. Wilson’s co-brother Prabhakar was my student in MCC.

E. S. Srinivasan from Department of Economics is also my very good friend.

All IAS Officers back then were from MCC, especially from the Department of Physics.

T. V. Ramachandran, President of Broadband India Forum, was my student.

MM Rajendran was also my good friend.

TN Seshan was one year senior to me. In 1962, he was appointed as Director of the State Transport Department. So when I went to Canada for the very first time, I could avoid Police enquiry because Seshan signed for me. Seshan’s sister’s son K.K. Shankaranarayanan was my student.

In the 1962 batch of MSc Physics, all the top three ranks in Physics in the University of Madras were from MCC. Thangaraj wrote to me. Santharam, Director of mathematical Sciences, got the second rank, and Mr. Seshadri, who’s now in Germany, got the third rank.

My appointment letter was in an inland letter. Thangaraj wrote to me from here, saying, ‘I’m appointing you as lecturer as you’ve got the second rank’. Somehow M. A. Thangaraj had a lot of confidence in me. Devanesan was Principal back then, said Dr. Rao!

Dr. Rao is also the CFO of the American Crystallographic Association Inc., Financial Counselor, IUCR, Dean Emeritus, Dr. Joe C. Jackson College of Graduate Studies and Research, Professor Emeritus, Department of Physics and Engineering, University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, Oklahoma and Ex-Governing Board Member, American Institute of Physics, to name a few!

MCC’s Global Engagement with QUEEN MARY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON, UK

23rd November 2023 | A Report

Our Guest: Ms. Clare Burke (Head of International Partnership), QMU

Members Present

Dr. Prince Solomon (Dean-International Programmes)

Ms. Clare Burke (Head of International Partnership)

Dr. Marilyn Gracey - Associate Dean(R&D)

Ms. Jaspreet Kaur (Principal Adviser (South Asia)

Study Abroad / Twinning Programmes - Queen Mary has one of the UK's largest Study Abroad programme attracting over 1,000 students annually, who come to Queen Mary for one of two-semesters as part of their Undergraduate programme Students follow Queen Mary modules (3 or 4 per semester) and gain credit which is transferred back to their home institution. Students can choose from modules across a wide range of subjects and disciplines - you can see the list of available modules here.

Articulations (Undergraduate -2+2) / Dual degree programmes (Postgraduate 1+1)- under this collaboration, we bring together two programmes delivered independently by two institutions by mapping programmes across one another to create a new programme, where students spend some time at the home institution and some time at the partner institution. At Undergraduate level, articulations focus on two specific programmes; while at Postgraduate level, the 1+1 arrangements can include a number of different programmes (from Queen Mary's perspective). When in London, students will follow the curriculum of a Queen Mary degree programme, earning redits that contribute to both degree programmes. When successfully completed, students graduate with a degree from both institutions and have the opportunity to apply for the UK Graduate visa and can work in the UK for up to two years after they graduate.

Summer School_programme-we also offer students the opportunity to spend a short period of time during the summer months, where students follow one module taught intensively over a three-week period and gain credit that can be transferred back to their home institution.

Action Points

Given you strengths in varied academic disciplines, we think this is a great opportunity for US to collaborate together in the following areas,

1. Summer School Program for English Literature, Commerce, Psychiatric Social

Work, Psychology and Business administration in Summer 2024. (Brochure attached)

2. 3+1 Programe. Student from MCC after finishing the Under Graduate program (3 years) can go directly for PG in Queen Mary University (for one year) + apply for the UK Graduate visa and can work in the UK for up to two years after they graduate.

* MCC UG Course outlines have to be mapped for possible courses in QMU.

3. After working on this 1+1 and 2+2 dual degree program can be explored.

4. QMU requires a 14-day module for International Students to come to MCC (general and Specific Themes: Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Life Science, Chemistry& Physics, Business Administration, Commerce, History)
