A Report

Two Feminist poets – Rike Scheffler and Christiane Rechenmacher conducted a workshop for the students of MCC on the Craft of Writing, in the International Guest House, today, 19th February 2025 from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm.

Earlier, they were warmly welcomed by our Principal Dr. Paul Wilson, the Dean of International Programmes Dr. Rufus, and the Head, Dept of English, Dr. Franklin Daniel.

Prof. Christina Dhanasekaran coordinated the workshop.

Dr Subhasri Vijayakumar, Leiterin - Information & Bibliothek, (Head of Information & Library), Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, facilitated the programme.

Rike Scheffler

Rike Scheffler (*1985) is a poet, musician and artist creating work at the intersection of language and music. Her work varies from poetry and poetical essays for publication in journals and anthologies (e.g. World Literature Today, Jahrbuch der Lyrik 2013-2019, to readings, concerts and performances (some solo, some with fellow musicians) as well as sonic ecosystems and spacial installations. As a live performer, she uses her voice, loop station, effect pedals and synthesizer, to create immersive realities challenging common perceptions.

Christiane Rechenmacher (A) CHRISTL MTH.

CHRISTL MTH. is an artist who cannot be framed. Her music, paintings and lyrics are uncompromising, critical and confrontational. She creates spaces where the presence of anger and love, fragility and strength are equally justified. In 2021 she released her first EP “A Room for her own” as CHRISTL. “I think I hate myself” is her debut.

Ms. Sneha Regi Thomas of II MA Communication [Registration No: 2301722017015] with Madras Christian College has been nominated and accepted to Soongsil University, Seoul, South Korea, as an Undergraduate International Exchange Student for a duration of One semester, from March 2025 to July 2025.

She has been admitted into the Mass Communication, as per the mutual exchange agreement with ACUCA - Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia’s Student Mobility Scheme (SMS).

The Principal Dr. Paul Wilson congratulated Ms. Sneha on being selected for the ACUCA Semester Abroad Programme. She will be boarding her flight on 23rd February 2025 to South Korea.

Visit of Ms. Sivaganga, Melbourne, Australia to MCC – Reg.

Ms. Sivaganga Sahathevan, an illustrious alumna of the Department of Botany, Madras Christian College, visited us in Campus on Thursday, 6th February 2025.

Ms. Sivaganga is a respected figure in the Australian Indian community and is known for her contributions to music. She received an award from SBS Australia, recognizing her dedication to the Indian community in Victoria, including her involvement in music.

She is the founder / coordinator of ‘Taste of India’ in 2001 which has since been a colossal success showcasing artistic and aesthetic qualities of Indian culture. 

Students of Ms. Sivaganga Sahathevan - the Founder / Coordinator of TOI & Chandrabanu’s Bharathalaya, along with classical Indian performing art professionals from Australia have collaborated to expand their knowledge & skills with this event. Over the years, several internationally renowned Indian artists have been invited to perform in Melbourne by the ‘Taste of India’ committee.

Today TOI is a significant event in Melbourne’s Darebin Music Feast that fosters the vibrant growth of the independent music & art scene in Melbourne, Australia.

At 10.45 am Ms. Sivaganga was warmly welcomed by our Principal Dr. Paul Wilson.

At 11.15 am, Ms. Sivaganga along with her daughter, visited the MCC-MRF Innovation Park, facilitated by Ms. Aarthi Ram. This was followed by an interaction with our Principal, Deans, Dr. Jacob, Dr. Daniel Evans and Dr. Aarthi, to discuss possible areas for collaboration. Mr. Alan Eben, II MA English pitches his proposal for the Pipe Organ.

At 12 pm – Dr. Babu, Dept of Botany, ushered Ms. Sivaganga to the Dept of Botany for interaction with the faculty and students of the Department of Botany.

At 1 pm, Ms. Sivaganga was hosted for lunch by our Principal.

The Study Abroad Seminar organised by the Office of International Programmes, MCC, was attended by more than 180 students in the Blue Whale Hall, MCC-MRF Innovation Park.

Breakfast Meeting with CUAC’s General Secretary | A Report

Our Principal Dr. Paul Wilson hosted Revd Richard A. Burnett, CUAC’s General Secretary, for a Breakfast Meeting, at the Principal's Residence. Revd. C. S. E. Ross, Chaplain, and Dr. Rufus, Dean of International Programmes joined in the discussions. 

During the occasion, we had a discussion on Sustainable Engagement and networking with CUAC Institutions, for Semester-Abroad, Cultural Immersion, Exchange Programmes, etc.

Principal Dr. Paul Wilson suggested that, if top-notch professors from CUAC member-institutions can come to MCC and be ‘Scholar-in-Residence’ for a period of six months, we can fully subsidise their stay in Campus and thereby create value proposition for our students.

Revd. Richard said that he would introduce us to Officials of Kenyon College, Ohio, for networking.

The Inauguration of Korean Papydos Café in MCC | A Report

The Inauguration of Papydos Café | A Report

The Inauguration of the 3rd Barista, Bakery and K-Cafe Course began with high mood on Thursday, 23rd January 2025 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the MCC-MRF Innovation Park premises.

The inauguration started with Prof. Arun Kumar Joseph, Associate DIP as the Emcee. The opening hymn marked the beginning of the inauguration. The opening prayer was conducted by Rev. Dr. C.E.S Ross, Chaplain.

The Special Guest of the day was Mr. Chang-nyun Kim, the Consul General of the Republic of Korea.

Dr. Surendran Purushothaman, Director SCE welcomed everyone and gave everyone a brief introduction to PapaDos’s MCC Cafe Startup. He included details about the origin of the name PapaDo which was fondly named after Dr. Do-Hyeong Lee.

After welcoming everyone, Dr. Do-Hyeong Lee, Coordinator, MCC-Hanshin Vocational Education Center outlined the course report for the 3rd Batch Barista, Bakery and KChef course that was collaborated with Madras Christian College, India and Hanshin University, Korea.

The duration of the course is from 20th January to 30th May which is roughly 18 weeks and 720 hours. The course will be for 8 weeks, and the Start-up incubation is 2 weeks.

The subjects that the course will focus on are Barista, Bakery, Korean chef, Food Safety, Business English, Co-operative, and Marketing Field Internship. The certificates that will be provided for this course are a Diploma, jointly by MCC India and HSU Korea, A Multi-Cuisine, by NSDC and Food safety, by FSSAI and FoSTAC.

The goal of this course is to have vocational education, acquisition of certificate and a start-up business or employment. The vision of this course is to foster food and beverage entrepreneurs.

The course report was followed by encouragement from Dr. P. Wilson, Principal and Secretary of MCC where he shared the experiences that he had with Dr. Do-Hyeong Lee and his many endeavors. He appreciated Dr. Do-Hyeong Lee for his ambitiousness and his hardworking quality in making PapaDos and the 3rd Batch course a success.

Mr. Kim Chang-Nyun, Chennai Consul General, Republic of Korea, gave his felicitations on the occasion, and wished well for the startup.

After the Inauguration, the opening ceremony of PapaDo’s commenced with Dr. DoHyeong Lee further covering the details of PapaDo’s business. The business is a partnership firm in MSME, Govt of India. The date on which the business was established is 14th December 2024. The future vision of PapaDo’s is to have a cooperative cafe in the brand of PapaDo’s. The partnership members were also introduced. The members were by 1st Batch of Barista and K-Chef course.

The members were Sentiyanger Longkumar, Chubasashi Aier, Easwaran D and Steila KT. The PapaDo’s MCC Cafe is sponsored by CSR Fund from J-Ark Logistics Pvt. Ltd. Mr. Sentiyanger conveyed his gratitude along with his other managing partners of PapaDo’s Cafe for the opportunity.

The commemorative plaque was delivered to Mr. Hwang, Jeong-Yong, the CEO of J-Ark by the Principal of Madras Christian College. Mr. Hwang, Jeong-Yong conveyed his gratitude for the warm welcome and appreciation.

The congratulatory song was sung beautifully by the Chennai Korean Church Quartet which left everyone in awe. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Meera, Associate Director of SCE.

After the vote of thanks, the benediction was given by Rev. Dr. C.E.S. Ross, Chaplain who ended the ceremony with benevolence. During the fellowship, Dr. Do-Hyeong Lee was asked what made him want to start PapaDo’s MCC Cafe. He shared his views that his ideas were to start a vocational education, a course that also ensured the acquisition of a certificate and a start-up.

He also shared that his motive for the cafe was that it would be a way to connect people and businesses and that it would be a collaborative business. PapaDos’s MCC Cafe also had very lively baristas who were ever ready to serve the people who had come there. It is safe to say that PapaDo’s MCC Cafe is an instant success, and it has captured the hearts of all MCCians.

Visit of Dr. Kelly Glubb-Smith, University of Waikato, New Zealand to MCC | A Report

Dr. Kelly Glubb-Smith, Professor of Psychology and Social Work with University of Waikato, New Zealand, visited us in Campus today, 21st January 2025. 

The faculty and the students from the Departments of Social Work and Psychology, had rewarding interactions with Dr. Kelly.

About Prof. Mohan

Professor Mohan Balasubramanian did his BSc Chemistry in Madras Christian College and his PG in Biotechnology with MS University of Baroda.

He carried out his PhD in Microbiology at the University of Saskatchewan when he discovered a contractile division apparatus in fission yeast containing actin regulatory proteins.

Following post-doctoral work at Vanderbilt University, he established his independent research group at the National University of Singapore in 1997. He moved to the University of Warwick, UK in 2013.

He is currently Professor and Pro-Dean Research of the Warwick Medical School.

He is the winner of the National Science medal Singapore in 2008. His research is funded by the Wellcome Trust, ERC, and the BBSRC. He has published numerous scholarly articles in Books and Journals, and he has bagged numerous research projects to his credit.

Changing F-1 Visa Status to H-1B Visa - Reg.

Move to help int’l students navigate cap-gap

International students on an F-1 (study visa) seeking to change their status to a H-1B (non-immigrant work visa) stand to gain from the flexibilities in H-1B modernisation rules, released on Tuesday night.

The new rule provides a longer protection tenure and mitigates employment disruption.

The immediate impact is that the 97,556 Indian students currently participating in the Optional Practical Training Program (OPT) will stand to gain.

There was an increase by 41% in OPT participation by Indians from the previous year, as per the latest Open Doors report for 2023-2024 academic year.

Foreign students on completion of their qualification are eligible for OPT of one year. Those hailing from the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) field of study get an extra tenure of two years.

Several individuals undergoing OPT are sponsored for the H-1B work visa by the organisation where they are undergoing such training. The term cap-gap refers to the period between the time an international student’s F-1 status ends and the H-1B status begins.

At present, if the H-1B application is filed in time, they can continue working beyond the expiry date on their OPT employment authorisation document, while waiting for the start date (Oct 1) of an approved or pending H-1B application.

However, if the application is not processed by Oct 1, the student must stop working as of this date.

“A key positive change for our Indian students on F-1 visas is the longer cap-gap protection period, which will help avoid employment disruption. The cap-gap protection period stands extended from Sept 30 to April 1 of the following calendar year. In other words the proposal provides up to an additional six months of status and employment authorisation. This policy change will al low US employers to retain international student talent,” said Snehal Batra, managing attorney at NPZ Law Group.

IIT Madras is organizing the Eminent Speaker Lecture Series on 7th January 2025 from 3.30 pm onwards, at the Anna Centenary Auditorium, Chennai.

The lecture will feature Prof. Subir Sachdev, the Herchel Smith Professor of Physics at Harvard University and a distinguished recipient of the Dirac Medal and Onsager Prize.

The lecture, titled "100 Years of Quantum Mechanics: From Bose and Einstein to Superconductors and Black Holes," will be held on 7th January 2025, from 3:30 P.M. onwards, at the Anna Centenary Auditorium, Chennai.

Prof. Subir Sachdev, Herchel Smith Professor of Physics at Harvard University, is one of the most illustrious and distinguished researchers in physics and a leading authority of our time.

In a career spanning over three decades, he has made profound contributions in many areas of theoretical physics, most notably pioneering our understanding of quantum phase transitions, strange metals and superconductors, black holes, and most remarkably, establishing a deep and unexpected connection between these myriad realizations of quantum entanglement through what is now called as the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model.

Prof. Sachdev's groundbreaking research connects quantum field theory, string theory, and black holes to reveal the fundamental behavior of quantum materials.

RISE Summer Internship in Germany - Reg.

[Fully-Funded Summer internship in Germany]

Applications for the RISE Summer Internship 2025 in Germany are currently open. This international internship in Europe is an excellent internship for undergraduate students.

Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) provides students from different countries to pursue a research internship at top German universities and research institutions. Students are matched with a host institution depending on their area of interest and receive mentorship and assistance from doctoral students and researchers.

RISE Germany 2025 receives funding from the German Federal Foreign Office. Around 300 scholarships are available every year.

It is a fully-funded internship that provides a monthly scholarship to cover all costs. It offers undergraduate students the chance to learn more about research in Germany and explore further study opportunities. Hence, making it a fantastic Germany internship.

The duration of the RISE Summer Internship is three months and will take place between 15 May and 15 July 2025.

NIG Internship Duration: 6 Weeks (June 13– July 24, 2025)

Eligibility Criteria of the NIG Summer Internship 2025

Applicants from all over the world are eligible to apply for the NIG Internship.

Both Undergraduates and Postgraduate applicants are eligible to apply.

Students who are interested in enrolling in the PhD program at NIG are also encouraged to apply.

Financial Funding

NIG will cover a round-trip airfare between the intern’s place of residence (location of school) and Japan, a round-trip transportation fare between the airport in Japan and NIG, accommodation fees at the institute's guesthouse, and travel insurance during the program. Living and miscellaneous expenses other than the above will not be provided by NIG and the interns must pay these costs by themselves.

The online application system opens on 6th December 2024 and closes at noon on 6th January 2025 (Japan standard time, JST).

The session was started by Ms. Shreya Prasath, III B.A. English (Aided) and the college prayer was read by Mr. Sabarinathan M, Global Student Ambassador.

The welcome address was given by Dr. Samuel Rufus, Dean of International Programmes.

Dr. Jacquiline Raja Bai, Head, Department of Economics (Aided) formally introduced Mr. Adems Jimmy George who is our alumnus and had completed his B.A. Economics from Madras Christian College from 2019-22.

He was a resident of the Bishop Heber Hall during his college days and during his undergraduate studies, Mr. Adems had interned at Infinite-Sum Modeling, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, SBI Life and Hedge Equities, gaining a broad range of experiences.

His proactive approach and analytical skills have consistently distinguished him. He has significant experience in finance, especially in investment banking. Mr. Adems is currently pursuing his M.Sc. in Finance with NUS Business School, Singapore. The National University of Singapore (NUS) is ranked 8th in the world and 1st in Asia in the 2025 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings (WUR).

Mr. Adems talked about his experiences during his undergraduate days which served as his keystones towards his success. He started his talk with a note of question, ‘Why?’. He emphasised upon the importance of answering this question before one thinks of studying abroad.

He mentioned his ‘belief in blessings’ and he also does not get into any conflict of interests with his professors or managers. His talk mainly focussed upon his mistakes and the subsequent learnings which he got in the last two years of his academic journey.

Mr. Adems mentioned about the three important things which is needed by every student, which are, ‘to look around and observe’, ‘conduct research’ and ‘importance of building ones networks’.

He talked about his experience in connecting with the students of St. Stephen’s College, DU and IIT’s for getting their guidance with respect to internships.

Mr. Adems told that, how important it was to be competitive in today’s world and the need for competing with ones own self to become realistically up in the markets. He talked about the need for keeping oneself updated to be on the right phase.

Mr. Adems talked about the importance and need to find ones area of interest and also about knowing one’s own self. He spoke about the connections found between the need for research and how it aids in an interview.

Mr. Adems mentioned that, the biggest strength of Madras Christian College were its alumni as they were found in highly esteemed and powerful roles in terms of job market. This aids one to get himself landed inside the job market successfully.

Mr. Adems mentioned about how, many people overrate the idea of studying abroad. He also said that, while choosing the option to go abroad in terms of academia one should not get carried away by the country or certain institution but should be in the search of finding the right fit for themselves.

He also mentioned that, the teaching methods in abroad require a lot of efforts from the students, as only a surface level of teaching is being provided. Mr. Adems also mentioned about not to underestimate the education provided abroad.

He also mentioned that the journey in academia can make one to become serious and responsible in the course of time. He also mentioned how an SOP should be focussed upon the GDP of their native country, reality and their necessity.

He talked about the importance of attending as many interviews as possible to find ones self placed into the job market.

Mr. Adems mentioned Singapore to be the most expensive country in the world and he also said that this nation has good universities in terms of academia and the industries harboured by them are very mature.

The talk was followed by a Q and A session and was concluded by the vote of thanks given by Prof. Arun Kumar Joseph, Associate Dean of International Programmes.
